Dog Vaccinations
Dog vaccinations will provide protection for your dog as well as peace of mind for you. Your dog will be protected against several preventable diseases which are often fatal, and this will also prevent diseases being spread between animals.
Your dog should receive primary vaccinations early in life, from around 8 weeks old, and again 2 to 4 weeks later. They will then receive boosters – usually once a year – for the rest of its life.
We routinely vaccinate against Canine Distemper, Parvovirus, Infectious Canine Hepatitis and Leptospirosis. We also highly recommend Kennel Cough vaccination. This is a live vaccination, which can have potential implications for severely immunocompromised people. If this applies to you, more information can be found HERE.
This vaccination schedule should keep your dog fully protected and most reputable kennels insist upon full protection before any dog is admitted.
Dogs can also be vaccinated against Rabies to comply with the Pet Travel Scheme.
A pet in poor health will not respond reliably to vaccination so we make sure that every dog is given a full clinical examination as part of their vaccination appointment. This is also really important for picking up any other health issues as early as possible and thus giving us the best chance of successful treatment of any problems.
Our Friends of Westport scheme is designed to cover all of your pet’s preventative healthcare needs, including vaccinations and flea and worming treatment, as well as giving discounts off nearly all products and services.
Cat Vaccinations
Our practice policy is to vaccination against Cat Flu and Enteritis. We would, however, strongly recommend vaccination against Feline Leukaemia if your cat goes outside. We can start vaccinations for your kitten from 9 weeks old, with the second injection 3-4 weeks after the first. Annual boosters are needed to keep the immunity reliably high.
Virtually all catteries will insist that your cat is fully vaccinated every year before admittance. Cats can also be vaccinated against Rabies as part of the Pet Travel Scheme.
Cats that are not 100% fit and well will not respond reliably to vaccination, so each patient is given a thorough health check by the vet before the booster is given. Every illness is best treated was early as possible, so the annual health check is just as important for your pet as the booster vaccination.
Our Friends of Westport scheme is designed to cover all of your pet’s preventative healthcare needs, including vaccinations and flea and worming treatment, as well as giving discounts off anything else needed for their care.
