Consultations last for up to 20 minutes each, allowing more time for us to get to know you and your pet, and to put you both at ease. During each consultation, a comprehensive history will be taken and a thorough clinical examination carried out.

We will also discuss treatment options and any other concerns that you may have about your pet.

Consultations are not just for when your pet is unwell. Routine check ups are important in detecting signs of early disease and so we will perform a
complete physical examination in all consultations, including vaccinations.

At Westport vets we offer new puppies and kittens a free of charge consultation prior to their vaccination. This provides a thorough health examination as soon as your new pet arrives home and allows an opportunity to discuss feeding and how to help them settle in with their new family.

As prevention is always better than cure, we also offer advice regarding dental care, nutrition, behaviour and management through consultations with our vets and nurses. Pets who are registered on our ‘Friends of Westport’ plan can receive a free of charge health check every 6 months, or can use that free consultation at any other point throughout the year.

For patients requiring ongoing medical treatment, we have a consultation every 3-6 months. This allows us to monitor the condition that is being treated and to adjust medications and dosages as appropriate. A reduced consultation fee is charged for these checks.

Nurse Clinics

Westport Veterinary Clinic offer regular nurse clinics and appointments run by our experienced fully qualified RVN’s (Registered Veterinary Nurses). We also have student veterinary nurses who will do consultations under the supervision of our RVN’s.

Our RVN’s are available to see you and your pets for the following:

  • 2nd vaccinations and Kennel Cough vaccinations
  • Microchipping
  • Post Op Checks and suture removal
  • Nail clipping
  • Bandage changes
  • Nutrition advice
  • Immunotherapy vaccines
  • Anal gland checks
  • Blood sampling
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Dental checks
  • Weight clinics
  • Diabetes clinics
  • Geriatric clinics
  • Triage appointments

As well as all of the above, our RVN team are always keen to help you with any difficulties such as tableting your pets or applying ear drops. This can require two people and we’re here to lend a helping hand.

The role of the RVN extends to being qualified to monitor anaesthetics, assist during operations, take x-rays and carry out minor surgical procedures and also train our student nurses who you will see assisting during your visits to the practice.
