Scratching Needs

Cats need to scratch in order to keep their claws sharp, to exercise and to stretch their muscles. Scratching is also a way in which they can mark their territory. If appropriate scratching facilities are not provided then cats will tend to choose objects they are not supposed to in order to fulfil their needs (this includes your carpets, furniture and curtains!). Scratching resources are essential for indoor cats but it can be beneficial to have them in your home even if your cat goes outdoors.

Today there are multiple varieties of scratching posts available to purchase for your cat. However, there a few factors to consider when choosing an appropriate scratching post for your cat –

  • Ensure the scratching post is sturdy and can take the weight of your cat leaning against it.
  • Posts should be tall enough to allow your cat to stretch out fully. This should be considered for both vertical and horizontal posts.
  • Scratching posts can be made from different materials including wood, cardboard and the traditional thick twine.

Top tips

  • Cats like to scratch when they first wake up so it can be helpful to have a scratching post near to their favourite sleeping spot!
  • It can be helpful to place scratching posts near windows and radiators to attract your cat towards them.
  • If your cat does not show any interest in scratching posts, it can be helpful to use a fishing rod toy to attract them to it and they can begin to place their claws in it. You can also sprinkle some catnip over it/nearby to attract their attention.
