Pet Dental Care at Home

Dental care it vital to ensure your pets are in their best health. This can be easily be managed and maintain at home. Without proper care, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age three.

Starting pets dental care at home when they are young is ideal however there is no age limit to when this can start – animals learn at any age! For home dental care to be effective teeth should be cleaned daily, if not daily then it is recommended that should be done a minimal of four times a week for brushing to be effective.

This can be easily built up in training (please see video link below) and once you have a routine in place, can be easily managed in just 10 minutes a day.

Bad breath is not normal – issues in the mouth, if left untreated:

  • can lead to a lot of discomfort
  • dangerous bacteria can spread from their mouth to vital organs, such as heart, liver and kidneys

Other ways to manage pets teeth – as well as regular cleaning at home:

  • routine vet or nurse dental check-ups
  • check pets diet is appropriate
  • what toys and chews are used

Dental pain signs are very subtle – animals cannot tell us they have dental pain, signs to look for are:

  • bad breath
  • change in eating habits
  • change in behaviour
  • excessive salivation
  • blood spots on toys/chews or in saliva
  • swelling round the face
  • changes to eating harder foods

Dog chews are a common cause od broken teeth, many being so hard teeth fracture.

Chews we recommend are Veggiedents Toothpaste we recommend for cats and dogs is Virbac Enzymatic.
